Chapter closed,\u201d said Chief Minister Pema Khandu reacting to the reported protests against the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project in Siang district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut,\u201d he added, \u201cThe case at hand is not about a hydropower project. Its about a <em>Multipurpose<\/em> Project, a project of national importance and envisioned by the Government of India and the Niti Aayog.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attending the \u2018Thanksgiving\u2019 program of local legislator and Panchayati Raj Minister Ojing Tasing on his electoral victory here this morning, Khandu said that \u2018misinformation\u2019 is being circulated to brainwash innocent villagers against a project, which is not even in its pre-initial stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insisting on \u2018misinformation\u2019 being spread, Khandu pointed that people who are \u2018instigating\u2019 the protests are themselves confused whether the said project is of \u201812500 MW\u2019, \u201811000 MW\u2019 or \u201810000 MW\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/arunachaltoday.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Image-2024-12-19-at-15.31.38-1024x683.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1901\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arunachaltoday.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Image-2024-12-19-at-15.31.38-1024x683.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/arunachaltoday.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Image-2024-12-19-at-15.31.38-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/arunachaltoday.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Image-2024-12-19-at-15.31.38-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/arunachaltoday.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Image-2024-12-19-at-15.31.38-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/arunachaltoday.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Image-2024-12-19-at-15.31.38-2048x1366.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/arunachaltoday.live\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Image-2024-12-19-at-15.31.38-600x400.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing the Chief Minister I am not aware, not even NHPC is aware of the exact wattage of power the project will generate. How do you know the capacity of the project when the survey and investigation process has not even begun?\u201d he wondered. Khandu asserted that the project is not all about generating hydropower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHydropower generation is a by-product of the multipurpose project by default. The real objective of the project is to save <em>Ane<\/em> Siang and the Adi society that is connected with the river since time immemorial,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"RS 10,000 CRORE REVENUE, SIANG UPPER MULTIPURPOSE PROJECT IS NATIONAL PROJECT SAYS CM PEMA KHANDU\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MoibaDwnYmk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elaborating on it, he said that China has already approved construction of a project that would generate a massive power of about 60000 MW on the river \u2013 known as Yarlung Tsangpo in the Tibet region just before entering India through Tuting in Upper Siang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He revealed that the Chinese government, which is not signatory to the International Water Conventions, intends to divert the water from the multiple water reservoirs to be created under the project to dry regions of Tibet and elsewhere in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn such a scenario it is inevitable that volume of water in Siang river will drastically get reduced so much so that during winters you will be able to cross the mighty Siang on foot. Would you like such a situation? We do not know yet the amount of power that this project will generate if at all executed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Negating \u2018rumors\u2019 that the government intends to forcibly execute the project by using armed police forces, Khandu said, \u201cWe are a democratic country. We do not believe in forcing projects on our own people. We believe in taking into confidence the last man in the queue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He welcomed \u2018questions\u2019 and admitted that \u2018confusions\u2019 are bound to rise but urged the people to come forward and clear their confusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOnly after Survey and Investigation, we will know where the dam will come up and what height it would be of and how much will be the submergence area. Then will come the \u2018public hearing\u2019 stage, where everyone will be consulted. There are several stages with prudent rules and guidelines before start of a project.
