Siram reiterated that the Congress party’s position on SUMP remains clear and that it has consistently raised the concerns of the people through press conferences, public statements and other democratic platforms.

During the meeting, the APCC President placed a ten-point charter of demands before Kharge, seeking immediate intervention in the ongoing situation.

Among its major demands, the APCC called for the immediate and unconditional release of all protesters detained in connection with anti-SUMP demonstrations and withdrawal of cases registered under the Arunachal Pradesh Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (APUAPA), subject to due process of law.

The party also demanded revocation of suspension orders against government employees, restoration of their service rights and benefits, withdrawal of cases against Gaon Burahs for supporting peaceful protests, and withdrawal of what it termed politically motivated SIC cases.

On the security front, the APCC demanded the withdrawal of additional paramilitary and security forces deployed in the SUMP-affected areas, stating that peace and normalcy must be restored through confidence-building measures rather than confrontation.

Significantly, the APCC reiterated its demand for permanent cancellation of the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, calling for an end to all efforts towards its implementation against the wishes of the affected indigenous communities.

The party further sought adequate compensation for individuals and families who have suffered financial losses and damages amid SUMP-related developments and confrontations, along with comprehensive medical treatment, rehabilitation and financial assistance for injured protesters.

It also stressed the need for meaningful, transparent and democratic dialogue with the affected communities to restore peace and rebuild public confidence in the region.

Kharge reportedly gave a patient hearing to the issues raised by the APCC delegation and took note of the concerns surrounding both the SUMP project and the strategic frontier situation at Taksing in Upper Subansiri district.

Assuring the delegation of the Congress party’s support, Kharge said the Indian National Congress would stand with the affected people and indigenous tribal communities and oppose any attempt to undermine their rights, dignity and democratic aspirations.

New Delhi, Nov 2: Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bosiram Siram on Monday met Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi and briefed him on the escalating concerns surrounding the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), urging the party’s central leadership to stand firmly with the indigenous communities opposing the mega dam.
