ITBP Jawan’s Life Saved After Emergency Airlift and Critical Heart Procedure at TRIHMS

NAHARLAGUN, Sep 25: In a remarkable feat of medical intervention, a 56-year-old ITBP jawan was saved from a life-threatening heart condition thanks to the swift action of the medical team at TRIHMS Naharlagun.

The jawan, stationed in the remote region of Gelemo, Upper Subansiri, was airlifted to the hospital on September 17 after experiencing severe chest pain for two days. Upon arrival, he was immediately assessed and diagnosed with a complex heart condition that included acute coronary syndrome (ACS), anterior wall myocardial infarction (AWMI), complete heart block (CHB), severe left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD), and acute renal failure. This combination of conditions presented a grave prognosis, as the heart was in a state of severe distress and multiple organs were failing.

Without delay, the patient was rushed to the cath lab, where a team of experienced cardiologists led by Dr. Tony Ete and Dr. Romar Dabu took charge. The team successfully implanted a temporary pacemaker to address the complete heart block, which was preventing the heart from beating effectively. Subsequently, an angioplasty was performed to open the blocked LAD artery, restoring blood flow to the heart muscle.

Despite the initial guarded prognosis due to the advanced stage of the heart attack, the patient’s condition gradually improved with ongoing medical management. The temporary pacemaker was eventually removed as his heart regained its intrinsic rhythm. His renal function also showed signs of improvement, and he was able to ambulate and recover.

The successful treatment was a result of the coordinated effort of the ITBP authorities, the TRIHMS Cardiology Department, and the skilled medical team. The availability of a state-of-the-art cath lab at TRIHMS, established under the leadership of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, played a crucial role in enabling the near-impossible treatment. This incident highlights the government’s commitment to providing top-tier healthcare services in the region, even in remote areas, stated a release.
