Naharlagun Police Crack Down on Interstate Drug Traffickers in ‘Operation Dawn’

Naharlagun, Sep 28: In a significant victory against drug trafficking, the Naharlagun Police have apprehended two notorious interstate drug peddlers in separate incidents under the ongoing anti-drug initiative, Operation Dawn.

On 27th September last, in the first operation, a joint effort by the Naharlagun and Assam Police led to the arrest of Ainul Rajibul Hussain, alias Raja (23), a habitual drug peddler hailing from No. 2 Ahmedpur, Lakhimpur, Assam. This arrest followed his involvement in a dramatic incident on 8th August 2024, when he supplied contraband drugs in Naharlagun.

Hussain, driving a white Scorpio without a number plate, evaded arrest by breaking through a police barricade, damaging police vehicles in the process. The vehicle was later found abandoned in Chiputa, Doimukh, but Hussain escaped under the cover of darkness. His arrest is linked to Naharlagun PS Case No. 92/24 under multiple sections of the NDPS Act.

In a separate operation conducted the same day, the Banderdewa Police apprehended another drug peddler, Sonu Deori, alias Bikash Deori (23), from Banderdewa market. Acting on a tip-off, the police recovered 5.48 grams of suspected heroin from his possession. Deori has been booked under Banderdewa PS Case No. 61/24 under Section 21(b) of the NDPS Act.

Both operations were executed under the command of SP Naharlagun, Sh. Mihin Gambo, and are part of a broader police crackdown on drug trafficking across the region. These arrests mark a critical step in the ICR Police’s ongoing efforts to curb the drug menace and ensure the safety of the community.

SP Gambo commended the officers involved, praising their relentless efforts in combating the drug trade and reaffirming the department’s commitment to safeguarding the region from such criminal activities, stated a release.
