ITANAGAR, Aug 4:  Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has welcomed the recent Supreme Court order staying the conviction of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case. The Gujarat court had earlier sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years in prison in the said case related.

While speaking to the media, President APCC and former Chief Minister Nabam Tuki stated that the Supreme Court’s decision to grant a stay in the case is not just a victory for Rahul Gandhi but also a triumph for the entire nation. According to Tuki, this order reflects the principles of democracy and secularism in the country.

The stay order means that Rahul Gandhi’s conviction will be put on hold, and he will not face any disqualification from Parliament as a result of the case, he added.

The defamation case against Rahul Gandhi was filed in 2019 when he made a remark about the surname ‘Modi,’ referring to Nirav and Lalit Modi, during his campaign for the Lok Sabha elections at an election rally in Kolar, Karnataka. A Gujarat BJP leader and former state minister, Purnesh Modi, filed a private complaint against Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Congress leader had defamed everyone with the name Modi.

APCC President Nabam Tuki emphasized that justice has prevailed, and the people continue to have faith in the democratic system of the country. With the case now back in action following the Supreme Court’s stay order, the Congress party is determined to work with full force for the welfare of the people.

Looking ahead to the upcoming general assembly elections, Tuki assured that the state Congress would work diligently to file nominations for the MP seats in the state. Additionally, the party aims to contest all 60 assembly seats in the state.
