Namsai, July 21: The investigation into the Lal Pahar firing incident has gathered momentum, with Namsai Police arresting the suspected driver of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR allegedly linked to the case and constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a detailed, evidence-based investigation.
In an official press release issued on Tuesday, the Office of the Superintendent of Police stated that the incident was first reported on July 17, when police were informed that a 29-year-old woman had suffered a gunshot injury during the firing incident. She was initially treated at the District Hospital in Namsai before being shifted to Dibrugarh for advanced treatment under police escort.
Police said that on July 18, a written complaint concerning a counter-insurgency (CI) operation was submitted by the 8th Assam Rifles, leading to the registration of Namsai PS Case No. 44/2026 under Sections 109(1), 132, 61(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), read with Sections 25(1B) and 27 of the Arms Act, 1959.
To ensure a fair and professional investigation, Superintendent of Police Sangey Thinley, APPS, constituted a Special Investigation Team, with Dy.SP (APPS) Kengo Dirchi, SDPO, Namsai, leading the probe.
As part of the investigation, police arrested the suspected WagonR driver in accordance with legal procedures. The vehicle has been seized and subjected to forensic examination, while biological, ballistic, and other material evidence has been collected, sealed, and preserved for scientific analysis at the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).
The police team has also revisited the crime scene multiple times to ensure every possible piece of evidence is identified and documented. Police confirmed that electronic evidence is also being collected and analysed as part of the ongoing investigation.
In another key development, the injured woman has filed a separate FIR against unidentified persons, resulting in the registration of Namsai PS Case No. 45/2026 under Sections 109(1) and 118 of the BNS, read with Sections 25(1B) and 27 of the Arms Act. The case is currently under investigation.
According to the police, the probe is being conducted from every possible angle, using forensic, ballistic, biological, and electronic evidence to establish the complete sequence of events and fix accountability.
The Namsai Police also appealed to the public to refrain from circulating rumours or unverified claims about the incident, assuring that official updates will be shared as the investigation progresses.
