NAHARLAGUN, Oct 17:  A self-defence awareness programme was organized for around 100 first-year MBBS students at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) on Thursday. The event was conducted in collaboration with the Capital Police and the Arunachal Pradesh Police Sports Control Board, aiming to enhance the safety and security awareness of the newly joined medical students.

The programme was led by Superintendent of Police Itanagar Capital Complex Rohit Rajbir Singh, IPS and his team, as part of a broader initiative to promote personal safety among students. During his address, SP Singh emphasized the importance of self-defence not only in physical terms but also as a means of increasing students’ awareness of their surroundings. He encouraged the future doctors to remain vigilant, stay prepared, and become leaders who contribute to the safety of their communities. He also introduced “Ane’s Home,” a new project at the Women Police Station in Itanagar, designed as a safe space for victims of sexual and domestic abuse. SP Singh invited the students to visit the facility and take part in future welfare initiatives.

Inspector Rina Sonam, Officer-in-Charge of the Women Police Station, Itanagar, gave a presentation on women and child safety in the district. She highlighted the critical role of the Women Police Station in protecting vulnerable groups and urged students to report incidents of harassment or abuse, assuring them of the police’s commitment to swift action.

One of the key initiatives launched during the event was the installation of Police Ajin Complaint Boxes on the TRIHMS campus. SP Singh encouraged students to use these boxes to report any cases of bullying or abuse, assuring that all complaints will be monitored directly by the Women Police Station for immediate action.

The highlight of the event was a series of self-defence demonstrations by expert officers from the Arunachal Pradesh Police, including CT Pisa Nachung, CT Dunglin Natam, FM Likha Rajen, FM Wangcha Lowang, CT Tumnu Gadi, CT Nipa Tara, and CT Jenlan Noklo. Their practical demonstrations aimed to equip students with essential skills to defend themselves in potentially dangerous situations.

The programme was attended by several TRIHMS officials, including Dr. Ashok L Dethe, I/C Dean, Dr. GSN Rao, Foundation Course Coordinator, Dr. Rinchin, Associate Professor of Cardiology, Dr. Mohsin Ansari Ahmed, and Dr. Tarh Yaza, Tutor of Biochemistry.
