ITANAGAR, Nov 5: The All Nyishi Youth Association (ANYA) voiced strong dissatisfaction today over what it described as discriminatory treatment by the Tai Khamti society of Namsai district regarding land ownership issues in the area. The association claims that members of the Nyishi community face obstacles in purchasing and developing land in Namsai, while non-Nyishi residents are granted more freedom.

Addressing the media at the Press Club, President ANYA Jamru Ruja highlighted a recent incident in Depobil Village, Namsai District, where a senior Nyishi community member’s bought a land  and attempted to construct a house was reportedly met with opposition from local residents. Ruja noted that another Arunachalee individual, belonging to a non-Nyishi tribe, had been allowed to proceed with similar activities on the same plot, describing this as clear discrimination.

“Nyishi and Khamti communities have long shared a cordial relationship,” Ruja stated, “but actions like these threaten to create communal tensions.” Ruja further revealed that ANYA has submitted a formal request to the District Administration in Namsai  even to Chief Secretary to reconsider an executive order dated May 10, 2024, which Ruja argued impedes peaceful coexistence.

The Tai Khamti Singpho Council, the local apex body, had issued a clarification on May 22, 2024, asserting that its review found no evidence implicating a senior Nyishi leader in any unlawful land purchase. Ruja also urged the Deputy Commissioner of Namsai to avoid enforcing the Prevention of Inter-District Migration Act of 1999 within Namsai, as this might create panic and disturb the region’s harmony.

The council’s prior submission (Ref No. KSC/DA/45/2021, dated January 4, 2021) had requested a ban on land sales to non-natives in Namsai District. ANYA expressed concerns over this measure, viewing it as a potential precursor to enforcing the Prevention of Inter-District Migration Act, which could strain relations among Arunachal Pradesh’s diverse communities, added ANYA President.

Ruja also clarified that there is no political motives behind their stance. However, he warned that if the issue remains unresolved within 15 days, ANYA may resort to alternative actions to defend the interests of the Nyishi community.
