ITANAGAR, 08 Nov : In a recent incident that has sparked outrage, a police constable from Itanagar has been accused of molesting a young woman near the Itanagar Police Station. This incident was brought to light on social media, where a post detailing the alleged misconduct quickly went viral on WhatsApp and Facebook.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) Capital, Shri Rohit Rajbir Singh informed that the Social Media Cell of Itanagar Police promptly took suo moto cognizance of the post on November 7, last, and launched an investigation led by Inspector Khiksi Yangfo, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Itanagar Police Station, and Inspector Rina Sonam, OC of the Women’s Police Station (WPS). They swiftly traced the victim and her family, who initially hesitated to register a formal complaint. However, following support and counseling from the officers, the victim agreed, leading to the formal registration of Itanagar WPS Case No. 61/2024 under Sections 74/75/78 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023,stated SP.
According to the victim’s statement, she had gone to the Itanagar Police Station late at night to charge her mobile phone. Despite repeated offers by the duty officer to ensure her safe return home, she declined the assistance. After leaving the station, she was followed by an individual who subsequently molested her in a dimly lit area a short distance from the station. The young woman confided in her friends about the traumatic experience, prompting one of them to share the incident online, leading to widespread attention.
Following the victim’s account, police identified the accused as Constable Nyenwang Wangsu. He has since been apprehended and is in police custody, pending legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Capital, has expressed his regret and condemnation of the incident. He assured the public that the accused would face strict and swift action. “The safety of women and children is the topmost priority of Capital Police,” he stated. “The accused has been arrested and will face legal consequences. Such conduct will not be tolerated, and we are committed to ensuring that no police personnel ever contemplates assaulting a woman.”
SP further encouraged victims to come forward and report any crimes, reiterating that individuals uncomfortable with visiting a police station in person could reach out via Capital Police’s social media platforms, emergency helpline 112, or the Pink PCR units. “We aim to make reporting crimes easier and more accessible for everyone,” he added.
