ANINI, Dec 18: A one-day Language Promotion Program for Idu Mishmi was held at Government Higher Secondary School, Anini. Organized by the All Idu Mishmi Student Union (AIMSU), District Dibang Valley Student Union (DVDSU), and RIWATCH Centre for the Mother Language (RCML), the program featured a Visual Quiz and Debate competition conducted in the Idu Mishmi language. The event aimed to promote and revitalize the use of the indigenous language.
In the Debate competition, students from Government Higher Secondary School, Anini, secured the first position, while Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) Anini students claimed second place, showcasing the talent of the participants.
In Visual Quiz competition JNV Anini students, Miss Shiya Mihu and Mr. Kichiwu Ekru, emerge victorious in the first position, followed by Government Higher Secondary School representatives, Mr. Geju Elapra and Miss Adume Mihu, in second place. The third position was bagged by Miss Anjayu Mihu and Mr. Daiku Mikhu, also from JNV Anini.
Miju Mena, Research Assistant at RCML, emphasized that losing a mother tongue is equivalent to losing cultural identity and traditions. He also spoke on RCML’s role in preserving lesser-known tribal languages and cultures in Northeast India.
Jene Linggi, Vice Principal of Government Higher Secondary School Anini, praised the organizers and encouraged students to take pride in their language and heritage. He stressed that language is a crucial part of one’s identity and an essential tool for preserving traditions.
The program was a step toward raising awareness about the need for linguistic and cultural preservation within the Idu Mishmi community. The organizers hope such initiatives will inspire the younger generation to cherish and pass on their native language to future generations.
