Nirjuli, Feb 2 In a joint operation, Nirjuli Police, with assistance from Digboi Police in Assam, arrested Biswajit Bharali (44), a habitual fraudster who had been evading the authorities for seven months after defrauding individuals of ₹46 lakh and stealing a Mahindra Thar. Bharali was apprehended in Digboi, Tinsukia District, Assam.
The case originated on June 1, 2024, when two complaints were registered against Bharali at Nirjuli Police Station. The first complainant alleged that Bharali had proposed a partnership for a superbike garage in Lekhi Village, Nirjuli, convincing him to invest ₹30 lakh. He later obtained an additional ₹12 lakh fraudulently, citing the need for spare parts and operational costs. After securing the funds, he abandoned the business and disappeared.
In another case, Bharali was accused of swindling ₹4 lakh and stealing a Mahindra Thar before absconding.

During the investigation, police examined the garage and recovered a country-made pistol, a magazine, and three live rounds (7.65mm caliber), linked to Bharali.
For seven months, Nirjuli Police conducted intensive technical surveillance and gathered intelligence, ultimately confirming Bharali’s presence in Tinsukia District, Assam. Acting on this information, SP ICR Naharlagun, Shri Mihin Gambo, IPS, formed a special police team comprising SI Vivek Linggi, Ct. Tadar Tayang, and Ct. K.T. Tali, under the supervision of SDPO Naharlagun, Shri Rishi Longdo, and OC Nirjuli PS, Insp T.M. Nekam. The team, led by SI Vivek Linggi, coordinated with Digboi Police and successfully arrested Bharali. The stolen Mahindra Thar was also recovered from his possession.
During interrogation, Bharali admitted to committing fraud, stealing the vehicle, and illegally possessing a firearm.
SP ICR Naharlagun, Shri Mihin Gambo, IPS, praised the Nirjuli and Digboi Police for their effective coordination and tireless efforts in capturing the fugitive and recovering stolen property. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further links in Bharali’s fraudulent operations.
