Fake Identity, Secret Recordings, and Blackmail: Capital Police Busts Online Exploitation Case

ITANAGAR, June 30: In a significant breakthrough, Capital Police on Monday arrested a 35-year-old man accused of identity fraud, blackmail, and sexual exploitation, following a detailed investigation initiated by the Women Police Station (WPS), Itanagar.

The case dates back to June 4, 2025, when a 33-year-old woman from Ziro Point lodged a complaint alleging that the accused, identified as Md. Salam Khureshi, had entered into a relationship with her in 2018 under a false identity. Posing as an unmarried Marwari man from Delhi, Khureshi concealed the fact that he was actually a married Muslim man with a child.

Upon discovering his real identity and attempting to end the relationship, the victim was allegedly subjected to blackmail using intimate photos and videos secretly recorded by the accused. The complaint also highlighted sustained psychological harassment and coercion inflicted upon her.

Acting on the FIR, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Sub-Inspector  Bamang Yakum spearheaded the investigation. After weeks of surveillance and technical tracking, police traced the accused to Sonari in Assam’s Charaideo district. A dedicated team from WPS Itanagar was sent to the location and successfully apprehended him on June 30, 2025.

The Capital Police, in an official release, reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance toward cybercrimes and crimes against women. Authorities have urged citizens, especially women, to report such offenses without hesitation, assuring prompt and decisive action.
