Rahul Gandhi takes note of different challenges of Arunachal

ITANAGAR, 24 Jan: As part of the ongoing Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, a significant meeting was held by APWWS (Arunachal Pradesh Women Welfare Society), IRAD (Indigenous Research Advocacy Dibang), LGBTQIA+ community with the Member of Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, in Itanagar on Wednesday. The meeting addressed critical issues about the region, and various representatives presented their concerns and grievances to Mr. Gandhi.

Jarjum Ete, Advisor of APWWS passionately discussed the Monogamy Bill, Forest Rights Act (FRA), and its non-implementation in Arunachal Pradesh. She shed light on the challenges faced by the locals and raised questions about the prevalence of polygamy. Mr. Gandhi actively engaged in the conversation and inquired about the specific challenges faced in the state.

Adv Sonam Tsomo, representing IRAD (Indigenous Research Advocacy Dibang) presented on the recent Forest Conservation Amendment Act and its potential impact on tribal society and the environment. She highlighted concerns about the 100 km aerial distance exemption for strategic and linear projects, which could adversely affect biodiversity and indigenous rights. Mr. Gandhi expressed concern and sought information about any resistance from the local communities in Arunachal.

Yuma Narah, Psychologist, representing AP Queer Station addressed the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community in Arunachal Pradesh, emphasizing the need for equal opportunities and the introduction of sex education through formal education. Mr. Gandhi accepted the memorandum and expressed concern over the state’s negligence towards these issues.

Adv Ebo Mili, a member of IRAD brought attention to the issues surrounding CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) and highlighted the disparity between paper implementation and ground reality. Additionally, he presented concerns related to the Siang Dam and other dams in Arunachal Pradesh, revealing how locals are kept in the dark and environmental impact assessments are not being conducted properly. Mr. Gandhi expressed shock at the violations within CAMPA. He has assured that he would take up the issues submitted to him for necessary action. The meeting was marked by a commitment to address the concerns raised by the representatives, reflecting a collaborative effort towards the betterment of Arunachal Pradesh.
