Changlang Police Register First Case Under New Law

JAIRAMPUR ,July 5: In a significant development, the Changlang Police, in a coordinated effort with the Assam Rifles, registered the first case of a terrorist act under the newly enacted Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023. The case was recorded at the Jairampur Police Station following a successful operation in the Old Khamdu area.

During the operation, an active cadre of the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), commonly known as ULFA (I), was apprehended. Authorities seized a 7.65 MM pistol, live rounds, and various other articles from the suspect, marking a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to curb insurgency and terrorist activities in the region, stated a press statement by Changlang Police.

The apprehension and the registration of the case under the BNS 2023 signify a robust application of the new legal framework aimed at tackling terrorism more effectively. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, which came into force earlier this year, replaces the older Indian Penal Code with a more comprehensive and stringent set of laws to address modern security challenges.

The Changlang Police, alongside the Assam Rifles, have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region. They have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

Further investigations are underway, and the suspect is currently in custody for questioning. The authorities believe this arrest will lead to more significant breakthroughs in their fight against insurgent groups operating in the Northeast.
