Banderdewa Police Arrests Kidnapper after Four-Month Pursuit in Sikkim

BANDERDEWA,Sep 16: In a significant breakthrough, the Banderdewa Police, with the active assistance of Sikkim Police, successfully arrested a wanted kidnapper after a four-month-long pursuit. The accused, 28-year-old Mr. Kalu Chetry, also known as Tenzing Tsering, a resident of Tawang, was apprehended on 15th September 2024 in Gangtok, Sikkim. Mr. Chetry, son of the late Hari Bahadur Chetry, was wanted in connection with a kidnapping case registered under Banderdewa Police Station (C/No. 31/24 U/S 364(A)/34 R/W Sec 25(1)(a) of the Arms Act).

The crime took place on 4th May 2024 when Mr. Chetry, along with three accomplices, deceitfully lured a woman to the PTC Gate in Banderdewa under the guise of selling local ornaments. When the woman arrived to purchase the items, she was forcibly abducted, taken to a secluded area near the Assam border, and robbed of ₹3 lakh while being threatened with a pistol. The criminals then fled towards Assam.

The Banderdewa Police immediately launched a rigorous search operation and tracked the suspect’s movements. After months of careful investigation, authorities pinpointed Mr. Chetry’s location in Gangtok, leading to his arrest.

A team led by SI Koj Tada, along with Constables Tade Bomdan, Tanik Hichik, and Lady Constable Kago Yamung, collaborated closely with SHO Sardar Police Station, Gangtok. The operation was supervised by SP Naharlagun, Mihin Gambo, and OC Banderdewa PS, Kipa Hamak, ensuring the seamless cooperation of both state police forces.

Following his arrest, Mr. Chetry was brought back to Banderdewa for further investigation. Initial findings indicate his involvement in multiple cases of theft and cheating, specifically involving local ornaments.
