TANAGAR, Nov 3: The Arunachal Democratic Party (ADP) today raised serious concerns over the unchecked illegal coal mining operations in Changlang District, highlighting its detrimental impacts on the environment and local communities.
In a press conference, ADP leaders voiced strong criticisms against the state government’s failure to curb illegal activities despite an order from the Supreme Court prohibiting coal extraction.
ADP’s Organization Secretary, Shama Bagang, alleged that the government has violated the Supreme Court directive by allowing illegal coal mining to persist. Bagang further claimed that a report submitted by a committee appointed by the Changlang district administration was “faulty” and did not adequately address the severity of the issue. Criticizing the Department of Geology and Mining for its inaction, Bagang demanded that the government form a new committee to investigate the matter, suggesting that a member from ADP be included to ensure transparency.
“There is an urgent need for the government to step up and regulate these illegal mining activities,” Bagang stated. He emphasized the necessity for accountability, especially in protecting the state’s natural resources and incorporating local communities in resource management decisions. The ongoing illegal mining poses significant environmental hazards and undermines the rights and welfare of local residents.
ADP’s Vice President Johny Yangfo criticized the government’s handling of the Agri-Horticulture sector. He highlighted the condition of a processing industry set up in West Siang, intended to aid local farmers and boost revenue. However, the facility has reportedly remained non-operational since its inception, depriving farmers of essential support and opportunities. “This industry was meant to empower local farmers and contribute to the state’s economy, yet it remains defunct,” Yangfo lamented. He added that ADP has repeatedly submitted requests to the concerned department, yet no positive response or action has been taken.
ADP leaders called on the government to prioritize resolving these issues, emphasizing the potential benefits of a functioning Agri-Horticulture Processing Industry and sustainable management of natural resources to secure Arunachal Pradesh’s socio-economic development.
