Drug Trafficking Crackdown: Police Nab Two with Heroin Near Barapani Bridge

PAPU HILL/NAHARLAGUN , Jan 13: In a significant breakthrough the Papu Hills Police-Naharlagun under Operation Dawn 2.0 arrested two individuals and seized a total of 5.350 grams of suspected heroin during a drug bust near Barapani Bridge, Papu Nallah. The operation was conducted based on credible intelligence about a planned drug transaction.

A team led by Inspector T. Mai, Officer-in-Charge of Papu Hills Police Station, and supported by SI A.K. Jha, Constables P. Halder, and T. Sikom, carried out the operation under the supervision of SDPO Naharlagun, Rishi Longdo. Acting swiftly, the police apprehended two suspects, identified as Sanjit Barman and Krishna Chowdhary.

Sanjit Barman, from Laluk, N. Lakhimpur, Assam, temporarily residing at Barapani, Papu Nallah was found in possession of 1.300 grams of suspected heroin and ₹5,700 cash. During questioning, he revealed that the drugs had been procured from Krishna Chowdhary, hailing from Dergaon, Golaghat, Assam, and temporarily residing at C-Sector, Naharlagun.

Following this lead, the police conducted a search at Chowdhary’s residence in the presence of an EAC Magistrate. The search resulted in the recovery of 4.050 grams of suspected heroin stored in three vials hidden in a black polythene bag in the bathroom. Additionally, 13 empty vials and two syringes were seized, believed to be used for drug-related activities.

The total quantity of heroin recovered from the operation amounted to 5.350 grams. A case has been registered under Papu Hills PS Case No. 09/25 U/S 21(a)/27 NDPS Act, and the investigation has been assigned to SI A.K. Jha. Both suspects underwent medical examinations and are currently held in custody at Papu Hills Police Station.

SP Naharlagun, Shri Mihin Gambo, commended the swift and coordinated efforts of the Papu Hills Police team, emphasizing the department’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace under Operation Dawn 2.0. He reaffirmed the resolve to combat drug trafficking and protect the youth from the devastating effects of substance abuse.
