Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Scheme Boosts Sex Ratio in Arunachal Pradesh

ROING, Mar 3: : The implementation of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme in Arunachal Pradesh has led to a significant improvement in the sex ratio, with 14 out of 25 districts recording over 900 females per 1,000 males in 2023-24, said Minister for Women & Child Development Minister Dasanglu Pul  here on Monday.

Speaking at the Beti Janmotsav event in Roing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the scheme, Pul highlighted that the state’s sex ratio now stands at 948.68 females per 1,000 males, surpassing the national average of 930. Notably, five districts—Shi Yomi, East Kameng, Kamle, Upper Siang, and Tawang—achieved sex ratios exceeding 1,000 in 2023-24.

Pul also emphasized a notable decline in dropout rates among girls at the secondary and higher secondary levels, which dropped from 30.89% in 2019-20 to 12.5% in 2021-22. Additionally, first-trimester ANC (Antenatal Care) registration, a key indicator of maternal health, has shown substantial improvement.

The minister urged women to take full advantage of government schemes designed for their empowerment and stressed the need for greater awareness about girl child trafficking and parental support to ensure their safety.

Government Initiatives and Key Discussions

Pul outlined several key government initiatives, including:

-Prioritizing intra-district and intra-state adoptions to streamline the child adoption process.

-Creating contractual posts to manage child and women helplines.

-Allocating funds for CDPO (Child Development Project Officer) quarters and working women’s hostels.

MLA and Advisor to the Home and Education Minister, Mutchu Mithi, praised the achievements of women across various fields and called for discussions on polygamy, stating that the practice undermines women’s self-respect.

MLA Puinnyo Apum encouraged women to avail themselves of various government welfare schemes, emphasizing their role in societal development.

Event Highlights

The event was attended by WCD Joint Secretary Sangeeta Yirang, Lower Dibang Valley Deputy Commissioner Soumya Saurabh, and State Nodal Officer (Mission Shakti) Bahe Koyu.

Child Welfare Committee (CWC) member Rema Mito and Nani Maria Society Chairperson Desai Linggi shared a success story of CCI Roing, highlighting the positive impact of child welfare initiatives.

The event concluded with a BBBP pledge, a cake-cutting ceremony, and the distribution of gifts to newborn girls and CCI children. Superintendent of Police Ringu Ngupok, other officials, Anganwadi workers, and students were also present at the celebration.(by Office of Minister WCD)
