Symbol of Arunachal’s scientific spirit discovered in Leparada District
ITANAGAR, Oct 11: In a remarkable recognition of his contributions towards promoting research, innovation, and sustainable development in Arunachal Pradesh’s agriculture and horticulture sectors, a newly discovered Begonia species has been named ‘Chowna Buku Chulu (Aryarakta)’, meaning “Noble Red”, in honour of Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein.
The discovery was made by the State Horticulture Research and Development Institute (SHRDI) from Basar in Leparada District. The stunning red-leaf Begonia — celebrated for its vibrant hue and unique morphology — symbolizes the spirit of scientific curiosity and the relentless pursuit of discovery that defines Arunachal Pradesh.
Expressing his gratitude, DyCM Chowna Mein stated (on social media platform) “humbled by the gesture” and extended heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated SHRDI research team led by Shri Egam Basar, along with experts Dr. Dipoo Dipankar Borah, Dr. Momang Taram, and Dr. Krishna Chowlu for their remarkable work in documenting and promoting the State’s rich biodiversity through indigenous nomenclature.

He further stated that this recognition motivates him to continue supporting scientists, researchers, and farmers in their collective mission to make Arunachal Pradesh a hub of agricultural excellence, innovation, and sustainability.
The discovery of Begonia Chowna Buku Chulu (Aryarakta) marks yet another milestone in the State’s ongoing efforts to blend traditional knowledge with modern science — reinforcing Arunachal’s position as a frontier of biodiversity and innovation.
