WALONG, Oct 28: In a tribute to the heroic soldiers of the 1962 Battle of Walong, the Indian Army organized a half marathon in the scenic Lohit Valley, drawing 558 spirited participants from across the Indian Armed Forces, ITBP, BRO, and local communities of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The event, part of a month-long celebration to mark the 62nd Walong Day, was flagged off by Olympian and Commonwealth Marathon runner, Subedar Narinder Singh Rawat.
Runners of all age groups took part in three challenging categories: the 21 km half marathon, a 10 km run, and a 5 km run, navigating the valley’s steep inclines and sharp descents that tested their physical endurance and determination. The top performers in each category were honored with medals and cash prizes, while all participants received T-shirts in appreciation of their efforts.
The marathon not only celebrated the bravery and sacrifices of the soldiers who defended Walong in 1962 but also promoted unity and physical fitness among the participants and the local community.
