NIRJULI, Dec 19: In a swift and commendable action, Nirjuli Police cracked a month-old case of handbag theft reported by a woman on 13th December 2024. The theft, which occurred on 13th November at the newly constructed bridge in Karsingsa, involved the loss of Rs. 15,000 in cash, a mobile phone, and a SIM card linked to the victim’s SBI account. Unauthorized UPI transactions totaling approximately Rs. 14,000 were carried out using the stolen phone between 15th and 17th November 2024.
Upon receiving the complaint, the case was registered at Nirjuli Police Station (C/No. 70/24) under Section 303(2) BNS. The investigation, led by SI Gopal Tok under the supervision of SDPO Naharlagun Shri Rishi Longdo and Inspector TM Nekam, Officer-in-Charge of Nirjuli Police Station, employed both technical and traditional methods to solve the case.
The stolen mobile phone was traced to a woman who had purchased it from the accused, leading to his identification as Nor Seeh @ Peso (27), a resident of Raka Village, Yachuli. On 18th December 2024, the accused was apprehended.
During interrogation, Nor Seeh confessed to being a habitual drug user and admitted to stealing the handbag. He revealed that he, along with an accomplice, used the stolen phone to access the victim’s bank account by generating OTPs and changing the GPay password. They then executed multiple UPI transactions in exchange for money in Ziro, Lower Subansiri.
The prompt investigation and recovery of stolen items were lauded by SP Naharlagun Shri Mihin Gambo, appreciated the Nirjuli Police team’s efforts. He also issued a public advisory urging people to remain vigilant, lock their vehicles securely while parked, and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station without delay.
