Apatani Students’ Union Delegates Visit ‘Lwnn Bwtom’ Stone in Maro

MARO, Jan 21: In a significant event, the delegates of the Apatani Students’ Union (ASU), led by President Pura Nado and General Secretary Koj Nichi, visited the historic Lwnn Bwtom Stone located at Maro Circle in Upper Subansiri District.

This stone is embedded in the rich mythology of the Apatani people, who believe that their ancestors placed local ornaments beneath two stones. It is said that anyone who attempts to disturb these stones would invoke a storm of lightning and loud thunder, causing fear among those who dare to travel near the site.

The myth surrounding Lwnn Bwtom has been passed down orally through generations, as the Abotani clan does not have a written history. Over five decades ago,the landowner Gomcha Maro’s father performed a ritual sacrifice of four hens to clear the surrounding jungle, preserving the site for future generations.

In a gesture of gratitude, President Pura Nado expressed his thanks to Gomcha Maro for his unwavering efforts in protecting this sacred stone without any alterations, emphasizing its cultural and spiritual importance. Recognizing the historical significance of the site, the ASU delegates discussed with the landowner plans to further preserve and develop the Lwnn Bwtom Stone.

They highlighted its importance as a symbol of migration, reflecting the journey of some of the Apatani people through this area. The preservation of the stone is seen as a vital step in maintaining the heritage of the Apatani community, ensuring that future generations can connect with their past, stated a release.
