ITANAGAR/YUPIA, Jan 3: Families of the victims of the St. Alphonsa School tragedy staged a protest outside the Court in Yupia, demanding justice for their loved ones and urging the court to reject the bail pleas of the accused.
“We are here demanding justice for our beloved son, who lost his life along with two others due to the negligence of the school authorities,” lamented a grieving family member during the protest. Holding placards, he further emphasized that bail should not be granted under any circumstances, as the police investigation is still ongoing. The police have even sought an extension of remand for the accused.
The family members insisted that the proprietor of the school and the landowner should also be held accountable for the tragedy. He expressed frustration with the state government and the education minister, accusing them of remaining silent on the issue.
Meanwhile, a joint meeting involving the District Administration, the Superintendent of Police, and the victims’ families was held today at the office of Deputy Commissioner Talo Potom. During the meeting, DC Potom announced the formation of a high-level committee to investigate the St. Alphonsa School tragedy, with the committee expected to submit its findings within seven days.
The DC also stated that a memorandum submitted by the victims’ families was thoroughly discussed in the meeting. The memorandum included demands for an immediate inquiry into the incident and the establishment of a fast-track court to ensure swift justice.
Earlier, SP Naharlagun Mihin Gambo informed the media that six individuals had been arrested in connection with the case. He assured that the police are conducting an extensive investigation to apply the appropriate legal sections for strict punishment against those responsible for the tragedy.
