Community Nutri Garden (Poshan Vatika) Launched in Changlang

CHANGLANG, Mar 27: A Community Nutri Garden (Poshan Vatika) was officially launched at Yatdam Circle, Changlang District by Deputy Commissioner Vishal Sah. The initiative, spearheaded by Circle Officer Dr. Ripi Doni under the Healthy Jongrom Project, aims to enhance food security, improve nutrition, and empower women by integrating sustainable and scientific farming methods.

Spread over 500 square meters of community-leased land, the Nutri Garden will serve as a model farm, encouraging local households to establish their own kitchen gardens for a steady supply of fresh, organic produce. The initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2 – Zero Hunger, SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production).

The project is being implemented in collaboration with multiple departments, including Horticulture, Agriculture, Health, CDPO, and Panchayat, ensuring technical guidance and year-round support. While these departments provide expertise, local community stakeholders will actively manage and maintain the garden.

The entire field has been strategically divided into six sections, with different groups overseeing specific responsibilities. Self-Help Groups (SHGs) will focus on seasonal crop cultivation, greenhouse farming, and vermicomposting for income generation. Anganwadi Workers (AWWs) will grow nutritious vegetables to support child nutrition, while ASHA workers will cultivate medicinal and herbal plants for common ailments. Additional sections will be dedicated to greenhouse farming and vermicomposting, promoting organic and eco-friendly agricultural methods.

The Nutri Garden integrates scientific farming techniques such as mixed cropping for soil health, space-efficient cultivation, organic practices, greenhouse farming, and vermicomposting. These sustainable methods will not only improve nutrition but also serve as a demonstration model for households, encouraging community-wide adoption of kitchen gardens, stated a release.

With this initiative, Changlang is taking a significant step toward sustainable agriculture, women’s empowerment, and local economic development, setting an example for other regions to follow.
